1. After mixed feelings about 2024, a majority of Americans believe 2025 will be a better year.
The start of a new year offers the chance to reflect on the year that was. New CivicScience data show that Americans had mixed feelings about 2024. Just under a third of respondents felt 2024 was better than 2023, compared with slightly over 3-in-10 who felt it was worse. Gen Z respondents were most likely to view 2024 as an improvement, while Gen X respondents were most likely to say it was worse than 2023.
Looking ahead, consumers are largely optimistic: more than half of U.S. adults expect 2025 to be an improvement over 2024. This aligns with earlier CivicScience data showing that Americans are more optimistic about the future than they were in 2023. Gen Z adults are the most positive, with two in three anticipating a better year, while those over 55 are most likely to feel that 2025 will be ‘much’ worse than 2024.
2. Interest in non-alcoholic beer and mocktails continues to climb amid rising Dry January intent.
As Dry January draws in more Americans each year, mocktails and non-alcoholic beer are becoming increasingly popular alternatives. CivicScience data finds that interest in mocktails and non-alcoholic beers among U.S. adults 21+ has climbed a noteworthy nine points since 2022, with a four-point jump in interest in the past year alone.

3. Homemade and upcycled gifts outpaced experience-related gift-giving in the 2024 holiday season.
The holiday season has come and gone, and CivicScience asked celebrators about some of the types of gifts they gave and received this time around. The data show a slightly higher percentage either gave or received a homemade or upcycled gift compared to those who gave or received an experience-related gift (such as a vacation, classes, or event tickets).
