After last week’s four-point slide in CivicScience’s ongoing COVID Comfort Index — the largest drop in months — Americans’ comfort doing day-to-day activities regained some ground in the latest reading. This could potentially be due to new reports suggesting that illnesses from the new Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus could be less severe than cases caused by other variants.
Five of the six indicators that CivicScience tracks turned in positive results, with “Traveling” being the only component to see a drop in comfort week over week (a one-point decline). “Going to a movie theater” led the way with a four-point weekly increase. We can likely expect to see continued volatility in the index over the next few weeks as new information about the fledgling Omicron variant continues to emerge.
