Maybe we can chalk it up to a new sense of dedication that arrived with the new year. Whatever the reason, the percentage of Americans currently comfortable with working bounced back in a big way in the first week of 2022, rising from 61% to 67%. The six-point lift broke a three-week slump and once again made ‘working’ the top daily activity Americans are comfortable with, according to CivicScience’s COVID Comfort Index.

Aside from increases to comfort with working and retail shopping, though, the components of the index fell across the board, causing a one-point drop to the index itself. That includes four-point decreases in the percentage of Americans who’d be comfortable either traveling or attending large public events right now. Both of those indicators dropped below the 40% threshold; comfort with traveling (39%) reached its lowest point since March 2021 (34%), before COVID-19 vaccines were widely accessible.
