You may have heard late last week that Facebook will now let you turn political ads off on your feed. According to CivicScience data, this is most Facebook users’ dream.
When asking Facebook users specifically about the new feature, we observe a stark sentiment. Fifty-eight percent of U.S. adult Facebook users say they are very likely to turn off political ads from their feeds.
Those who describe their political leanings as Conservative are the least likely to adopt the new feature. Note, also, that the Moderate folks are the most likely to say they’re very likely to jump on the bandwagon.
Things don’t look great for Facebook in general, as among U.S. adults who are likely to leave a platform in the next six months, again more than half say they are the most likely to stop using Facebook in the next six months.
This number has only grown since last year, too.
Those ages 34-54 are the most likely to be part of the group to want to leave Facebook. Consider that the most likelihood of leaving the platform comes from the group that is most likely to use it at all.
It’s clear that Facebook and politics should remain separate for the vast majority of the user base. Now it’s up to Facebook to figure out other ways to retain users.
