2. Users of Snapchat and X are increasingly likely to turn to Buy Now, Pay Later for holiday purchases this year.
The busiest part of the holiday shopping season is officially underway, and according to CivicScience polling data, social media habits seem to play a role in shaping purchasing behavior during the annual holiday shopping rush, especially when it comes to Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) usage. Data show those who use social media frequently are more likely to report a higher likelihood of using BNPL services this year compared to those who don’t use social media.
While this is likely a proxy for age, frequent users of certain social media platforms are particularly more likely to turn to BNPL for the holidays this year. In fact, more than two in five daily X (formerly Twitter) users and more than half of daily Snapchat users say they are more likely to use BNPL payment options this holiday season than they were last year. This comes as overall BNPL intent for the holidays appears likely to be down this year.
3. Gift card giving continues on the upswing for holiday shoppers this year.
The upward trend of holiday gift card purchasing appears likely to continue this year. The latest CivicScience data show just over two-thirds of Americans are at least ‘somewhat’ likely to purchase gift cards this holiday season, marking a two percentage point increase from 2023 and a four-point jump from 2022 (excluding those who answered ‘I’m not sure’).
What’s driving this rising interest? Additional data find ‘convenience,’ followed by ‘gift recipient is hard to shop for’ are the leading motivators driving gift shoppers to lean towards a gift card. Higher prices and supply chain issues are far less common.
