The percentage of Americans who were comfortable shopping in retail stores fell dramatically the week after Christmas, dropping from 67% to 62% week-over-week as fears about the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus spread.

And it wasn’t just shopping, either. The last two weeks of 2021 were not kind at all to CivicScience’s ongoing COVID Comfort Index. Over the past two weeks…

  1. Comfort with eating out dropped from 67% to 60%.
  2. Comfort with traveling fell from 51% to 43%.
  3. Comfort with attending large public events slipped from 48% to 42%.
  4. Comfort with working dropped from 65% to 61%.

The index overall hit its lowest point since mid-August. Check out our weekly COVID Check-In infographic below for more details.
