Electric vehicles are far from new. However, as a new wave of policy changes sweeps the nation, industries across the board–as well as consumers—are keeping their eyes open to potential changes that could be taking place. With so much uncertainty, having access to the relevant data can make a world of difference. CivicScience has the most up-to-date insights to provide clarity about electric vehicle sentiment today and what the future might hold.
As the latest CivicScience data show, electric vehicle interest is at its lowest point since 2020 with 68% of U.S. adults indicating that they are ‘not at all’ interested. Intent to own has seen a downward slide since 2021 and declined four percentage points from 2023 to 2024, now sitting at just 20%. EV Ownership appears to have hit a plateau, holding at 7% of Americans owning and liking their EV since 2023.

Take our Poll: Are you considering an EV for your next vehicle?
It’s worth reading this data with an eye to the fact that, according to another new poll by CivicScience, 48% of Americans feel President Trump will have a ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ negative impact on the EV market, and the sentiment is clearly divided by party lines. For many, it seems, how policies will impact electric vehicles is one of the bigger questions that needs to be answered.
Will EVs Take Off?
When asked for their thoughts on what the future will hold for electric vehicles in the next few years, a rising number of Americans (57%) say that ‘some people will have one but not many’ coupled with the percentage of people who say they will be ‘prevalent’ sliding. This sentiment echoes the hesitation surrounding Trump’s forthcoming policies, casting yet another shadow of doubt on the future of EVs.

Top Electric Vehicle Producers
When it comes to those who are interested in purchasing an electric vehicle, Toyota remains the top brand, with 29% of Americans preferring a Toyota EV. However, over the past three years, interest in Tesla among interested EV buyers has risen from 21% in 2023 to 26% today, despite overall Tesla favorability sliding among the general populace.

Weigh in: What’s your biggest EV concern?
Electric vehicles face an uncertain future. While consumers adjust to the new political landscape, the verdict is still out on who will purchase EVs. The coming months will be crucial for the EV industry as policy and any potential new or increased tariffs take shape.
