Last year, we predicted the advent calendar holiday tradition may be in decline. It’s been a financially turbulent year for many Americans, and while economic sentiment is on the mend, can newfound faith in the economy be enough to keep the Christmas countdown alive?

Compared to 2021, more respondents reported memories of advent calendars as part of their holiday celebrations, though figures between this year and last remained largely the same. Regarding participation, roughly 21% say they will partake this season (n=3,181).

CivicScience data also show that tradition isn’t enough to keep respondents interested. Fewer lifelong participants plan to partake this season as more adults hit the brakes on yuletide countdowns.

Among those undeterred by the waning trend, interest in decor-type advent calendars jumped while food and wine iterations took a small hit.

The general population has spoken, and it appears that 2022 is not the year for an advent calendar renaissance. However, tastes and trends can shift at a moment’s notice, and you can unwrap those insights as fast as they occur by requesting a demo here.
